Under his tenure, the entrance to the sheltered haven of English Harbour was transformed into a gracious dockyard forming a strategic base for the Royal Navy in the Caribbean. Now known as Nelson’s Dockyard, the Georgian architecture of the harbour, with its warehouses, storerooms and living quarters, is considered to be one of the finest examples of its kind in the world, and entering it is like stepping back in time. The Copper & Lumber Store used to house the copper that protected the bottom of the wooden ships used by Nelson’s Leeward Island fleet, and soldiers used to string their hammocks under the eaves of the building. However, when the Royal Navy left the harbour in 1889, the yard fell into disrepair. It was not until 1950 that an extensive restoration programme began. These days the store is home to more luxurious sleeping arrangements. The handsome stone building, now a hotel, has been restored to its former glory.English Harbour is one of the most popular destinations for the yachting fraternity, so there is a constant stream of weather-beaten sailors. The evening we arrived, some crew were holding an end-of-voyage reception in the courtyard, swapping stories of the high seas.
